Our roots lie in a chance encounter in Mexico that turned into a vision for bridging two vibrant cultures – Mexican and Canadian – through the universal language of food and beverages.

Our Story

Our company was born when our founder, Michael Droog, visited Mexico on a vacation. A seasoned entrepreneur and business development expert, Michael noticed the potential of authentic Mexican products like vanilla in the Canadian market.

He discussed the opportunity with his distribution network in Canada and decided to bring not just one, but a variety of products from Mexico. Upon his return to Mexico, he found a diverse range of producers, from large-scale manufacturers to micro-producers, all sharing a passion for their craft.

To serve these different scales of operations, Michael devised two business models – Comprehensive Import-Export Management and Distribution Representation. In doing so, he sought the help of Elisa Munoz, a specialist in forming and managing product and business associations, making La Fuente a lifeline for small-scale Mexican producers aiming to reach Canadian markets.

In the bustling city of Calgary, two soccer dads, Mike and Ricardo, found common ground not just on the soccer field sidelines but also in the intricate world of import and export. Both deeply embedded in the industry, their paths crossed during their children’s soccer games, where conversations quickly revealed complementary skill sets. Mike, with a keen eye for procurement and a passion for unearthing the finest products from Central America, and Ricardo, with an almost uncanny prowess in process and logistics, discovered a shared vision.

Their mutual respect was immediate. Mike’s adventurous spirit and love for sourcing coupled perfectly with Ricardo’s meticulous approach to logistics. This blend of talents presented a unique opportunity. Realizing the potential of their combined strengths, they decided to venture into a partnership, aiming to bridge the culinary gap between Central America and Canadian tables.

This endeavor wasn’t just about importing and exporting; it was about weaving together the fabric of two cultures, facilitated by the unlikely duo who met as cheering soccer dads. Their business model, rooted in a deep understanding of both ends of the supply chain, promised to deliver authentic flavors to Canada, all while streamlining the journey from farm to table. Mike and Ricardo’s story shows that sometimes, the best business partnerships are formed in the most unexpected places.
